Alginate: The Secret to Natural Weight Loss?
Scientists at Newcastle University in the UK have discovered that a natural fiber in seaweed, known as alginate, can potentially reduce fat intake by nearly 75%. The scientists discovered that this fiber actually blocks fat absorption in the body better than pretty much any over the counter anti-obesity treatment on the market.
While adding seaweed to your diet may be a good idea for now, once alginate was discovered as the fat blocker, scientists are now looking to incorporate the fiber into everyday foods such as bread, biscuits and even yogurt. Alginates are already used in low doses as food thickeners and stabilizers, but because of this new discovery it appears it will be added in large amounts for its nutritional value.
Dr. Brownlee, the lead researcher on the study also pointed out that, “Alginates not only have great potential for weight management — adding them to food also has the added advantage of boosting overall fiber content.”
